FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CEO of Virtuoso Education Consulting to Present Proactive Strategy Sessions at KIPP: School Summit 2013 in Las Vegas
Founder and CEO of Virtuoso Education Consulting LLC, Renae Azziz Ed.S., NCSP, will present two sessions at the KIPP: School Summit 2013 in Las Vegas held July 29-August 1, 2013. KIPP, the Knowledge Is Power Program, is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public charter schools with a track record of preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. The first of Azziz’s two presentations is titled “An Ounce of Prevention: Using School Wide Data trends to Prevent and Respond to Student Behavior,” followed by “Culture, Climate, and School Discipline: How to Impact Student Behavior Through a Cultural Lens.”
Azziz and her team at Virtuoso Education Consulting are well-known for training educators on the ways in which culture impacts behavior and learning. A specific focus on culture is essential to developing a positive school climate that works well for all students. Implementation of traditional Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) frameworks that support educators in developing school-wide proactive strategies have been proven to reduce negative behavior and discipline issues as well as improve educational progress standards. However, national data suggests that culturally diverse students continue to be overrepresented in office discipline referrals and suspensions. To address this issue, Virtuoso Education Consultants help educators explicitly integrate the relevancy of culture into traditional PBIS frameworks. “Often times those subjective behaviors that students are discipline for are culturally connected. Schools can effectively minimize student discipline concerns and resolve disproportionality in discipline when they begin to see challenging behaviors with a more accurate lens while at the same time focusing on developing cultural proficiency among educators,” explains Ms. Azziz. She will discuss best practices and responses for educators when they utilize a Culturally Responsive Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (CR-PBIS) framework. In the subsequent session, she will address the role of culture on learning and behavior and the application of CR-PBIS from this perspective.
Azziz looks forward to sharing these proven methods with administrators and educators involved with KIPP, an organization that strives to help students who are often underserved and from low-income households to get the best education and prepare them to succeed right through college.
