Registration Opens for Culturally Responsive Schoolwide PBIS Workshop

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (January 15, 2016)–Indiana University’s Center of Education and Lifelong Learning (CELL) has opened registration for a 3-day workshop titled “Culturally Responsive Schoolwide PBIS: A Workshop for Team Planning and Implementation.”  The workshop will begin February 18 and 19, 2016, and the third day will be June 14, 2016. Teams are expected to attend all three days at the IPS Professional Development Center—Forest Manor (4501 E. 32nd St., Indianapolis).

Designed for school-based representative (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) leadership teams, including building administrators and community mental health representatives, the February course will help teams develop data based, culturally responsive school wide discipline plans. The final day in June will share classroom systems of PBIS and planning for school-wide PBIS implementation. Registration for teams of one to three people costs $350 per person. Teams of four to eight people costs $265 per person. The price is for all three days and includes lunch.

Workshop coordinators include Renae Azziz Ed.S., NCSP, founder and CEO of Virtuoso Education Consulting, LLC; Michele Brentano, Research Associate at Center on Education and Lifelong Learning (CELL) and former Monroe County elementary school teacher; Deborah Reichmann, Research Associate / Trainer at CELL, former school social worker; and Sandy Washburn, Ph.D, Research Associate at CELL and the Statewide PBS Coordinator for Indiana.

Implementation of traditional Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) frameworks that support educators in developing school-wide proactive strategies have been proven to reduce negative behavior and discipline issues as well as improve educational progress standards. However, national data suggests that culturally diverse students continue to be overrepresented in office discipline referrals and suspensions. During the course of the workshop teams will develop strategies and implementation plans for their respective schools to further close the gap on these issues.
