Elkhart Community Schools
The Problem: Elkhart Community Schools was found to have academic under-achievement and elevated rates of suspensions and expulsions of minority students is contributing to disproportionality in ECS. Another issue was a lack of consistency in proactively resolving student concerns with the usage of data.
Our Solutions
Virtuoso worked alongside Elkhart Community Schools to implement the following strategies:
- Professional development trainings to develop staff knowledge and skill related to culturally responsive instruction and behavior management practices.
- District-wide training on a systematic problem solving process to proactively address student academic and behavior concerns.
Our work with Elkhart Community Schools brought forth the following positive results:
- District-wide adoption of Problem Solving process that is used prior students being referred for SPED testing.
- Use of formative assessments to inform Tier 1 instructional practices and to inform IEP goal setting for all SPED students.
- Reduction of disproportionate representation of African American students in SPED categories and in discipline outcomes
